What are the tools available for project planning and which software would you select and why?
Project management tools have been around for years, I remember PMW, the Hoskyns Project Management Workbench but I am showing my age. Things have moved on a lot. Richard updated me on today’s project planning software
Elementary project planning software is abundant, even Excel includes a template that allow simple bar charts (Gantt) to be portrayed against a calendar based on start and finish dates within a spreadsheet. There are more sophisticated tools that facilitate the management of complex projects and the market leaders are Oracle Primavera, Microsoft Project and Asta Powerproject.
Project Pilots has expertise in the use of each of these, but our preference is for Oracle Primavera which has an unmatched capacity to accommodate enormous programmes of work and has become the de facto requirement for large contracts.
Oracle says about Primavera “The world’s most successful organizations trust Primavera solutions for cloud and on-premise PPM to manage simple and complex projects”
Primavera is has its own Wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primavera_Systems , how is that for fame! “Primavera Systems, Inc was a private company providing Project Portfolio Management (PPM) software to help project-intensive organizations identify, prioritize, and select project investments and plan, manage, and control projects and project portfolios of all sizes”
